Design Development:

Textile Experiments

Dyeing:

I used natural dye and Shiburi tie-dye techniques on the sweatshirting to test out how it could create shapes and patterns. I was really happy with the vibrant colour pay off. I think in a larger scale the dyeing technique would come out a lot bolder and layered with different colours and embroidery it could create a very cool result.

Felting:

I tested out felting on the Felt Loom to see if it would work on the sweatshirt fabric and test out some shapes and designs. The problem with using the felting machine though is that it leaves visible needle marks on the fabric. In this case, hand felting may be better because you can apply the needles only where you want to felt.

3D Development

I think that an interesting way to incorporate the felting would be to use it to create that worn and used look that I love about Celia Pym's work. That way I could layer up and hand felt the wool onto the jumpers to and have it look less stuck on but rather as part of the garment. This would also nicely tie in my research on use and resourcefulness.
