This week my main focus was to get a visual direction for my project. I came across a number of painting by Emil Nolde and Monet which reminded me of the repair work done by artist Celia Pym on the knit jumpers. They have beautiful shapes and colours which I find inspiring and would like to try and recreate trough darning, embroidery, felting and dyeing experiments.

Embroidery Experiment:

Dye Research:
I looked into Shiburi dye techniques which can be used to create patterns by tying fabric or gathering it with thread. The pattern of the orange piece reminded me of the Aran sweater patterns as well as embroidery on a women's jacket from the Ellis Island photographs.

For a New Zealand reference I also looked into Edmund Hillary as he wore a lot of jumpers and loved the outdoors and nature. Representing both New Zealand's culture and landscapes.

For next week I would like to order some dyes and felting wool to experiment further with those.
